The Innovation in Arbitration Conference
16 March 2012

The half-day Innovation in Arbitration Conference on 8 March 2012 brought together more than 300 practitioners, academics, judges, arbitrators and in-house counsel from around the globe. Panelists and participants discussed and debated how innovation in arbitration can present new opportunities and challenges in a changing global market.

Sweden’s Minister for Trade, Ewa Björling, opened the conference and urged participants to adapt and take advantage of these new opportunities. Throughout the conference, panelists examined the value, risks and opportunities that new technology presents to the arbitral process; discussed specific techniques, such as tailoring the proceedings to the individual client’s needs and encouraging teamwork between counsel and clients, to adapt to changing client needs; and offered a client’s wish list in arbitration, debating whether modern arbitration meets these expectations.

The Innovation in Arbitration Conference was held in Stockholm at Konserthuset, home of the yearly Nobel Prize Ceremony. Participants were also invited to join the Nobel Prize Ceremony Guided Tour at the conclusion of the conference to get an inside look at the site where Stockholm honours international innovators each year. The SCC, Young Arbitrators Stockholm (YAS) and the Swedish Arbitration Association (SAA) co-hosted the conference.
