The SCC dispute resolution services and its activities continue to attract business community and legal practitioners from all parts of the world. Last year was the best year ever in SCC history and it seems as if this year will be equally successful. Two interesting trends appear from this year’s caseload: - As of 1 January 2008 six investment cases have been filed with the SCC. The cases have emerged out of bilateral (five cases) as well as multi-lateral investment agreements (one case). These figures uphold the SCC’s position as the second most popular venue for arbitrating investment disputes. Since 2001 SCC has received a total of 26 investment cases. Many states are from Russia and other CIS countries but also Latin America is represented in the statistics. - Further, we see an increasing interest in SCC mediation as an ADR mechanism. We have received six requests for mediation in 2008. Indeed mediation has great advantages compared to litigation and arbitration.

2008-11-27 In Memoriam - SCC Board Member Dr. Mohamed Aboul-Enein The painfully premature death of Dr. Mohamed Aboul-Enein, Director of the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCIA), is a source of deep sorrow to his many friends in the international arbitration community. Dr. Aboul-Enein was a leading arbitration personality not only in the Arab World but also internationally. Among other distinguished positions he was since many years Vice President of the International Federation of Commercial Arbitration Institutions (IFCAI), whose Council Meeting he attended shortly before his death. He was also a very active and much appreciated Member of the SCC Board. Dr. Aboul-Eniein was within the SCC staff very much liked for his warmth, wisdom and high personal standards. He will be truly missed.
